Our dental implants treatment process

Step 1 – Consultation

Your first appointment on your dental implants journey is a detailed consultation. We examine your teeth to make sure you are suitable for the treatment, and may use digital x-rays to aid our accurate diagnosis. We go through the process with you and give you the chance to ask any questions.

Step 2 – Planning

We use advanced digital scans and images of your mouth to accurately plan the best positions for your dental implant(s) and ensure a smooth process. If you need any treatments such as a bone graft or extraction, we carry this out at this stage.

Step 3 – Implant surgery

Our skilled dentist places your titanium implant(s) into your jaw in a relatively short surgical procedure, using local anaesthetic to ensure you stay comfortable. As implants need 3-6 months to heal and integrate with your bone, we fit a temporary tooth to protect your gum during this time.

Step 4 – Smile!

When your implant has healed, we take further scans of your mouth so your highly aesthetic replacement tooth can be made and fitted into place. It’s time to show off your brand new smile!

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a highly advanced dental restoration, used for a long-lasting solution to missing teeth. The dental implant is inserted into your jaw to exactly mimic a natural tooth root and provide much-needed support and strength for your smile. Eat and speak with confidence, and rediscover the look and feel of natural teeth!

The implant post resembles a cylinder or screw, and is made from titanium, a material that is very well tolerated by the human body. Over time, the titanium post fuses with the surrounding bone to become a solid foundation and support for a replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth, several missing teeth, or even a full set of upper or lower teeth.

Frequently asked questions

How painful is getting a dental implant?

We use local anaesthetic during dental implant surgery to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure and won’t feel any pain. After treatment, it is normal to experience some discomfort, but this can be managed with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol. Implant treatment is often less painful than having a tooth extraction, and most patients are able to return to their usual routines the next day.

How long does a dental implant last?

As the titanium dental implants are integrated with your jaw bone, they should last for many years, and can even last a lifetime if they are properly looked after. The crown or bridge that is fixed on top of your dental implant may need to be repaired or replaced due to natural wear and tear over time.

What are the 3 types of dental implants?

The main types of dental implants are single implants, multiple implants, and all on 4 dental implants. Single implants are used to replace one tooth, with a custom-made crown fitted on top. We can replace multiple missing teeth using strategically placed dental implants to support a bridge. All on 4 dental implants can replace a full upper or lower arch of teeth, giving a beautifully natural-looking and fully functional smile.

Are implants better than dentures?

Dental implants and dentures are both effective ways to replace missing teeth, but they offer different benefits. Dental implants are often considered a more stable and natural-feeling solution because they are anchored directly into the jawbone, much like natural tooth roots. This stability allows for comfortable chewing and speaking without the worry of movement. Dentures, on the other hand, are removable and can be a more cost-effective option initially, particularly when replacing multiple teeth. We’re happy to help you find the best solution for you.

What is the average UK price for full dental implants?

The average dental implant cost varies depending on several factors, including the number of implants required and the complexity of the case. As a guide, a single implant and crown at our practice in Worthing starts from £2500. For more information on the cost of dental implants, including all on 4 dental implants, please get in touch.

Who is a suitable candidate for dental implants?

Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple missing teeth or to replace teeth in cases with complete tooth loss. Therefore, almost anyone can potentially be a candidate for this treatment. However, various factors need to be taken into consideration, such as bone volume and quality, tooth and jaw relationships, oral habits and general medical health. Your dentist will assess your suitability for dental implants at your initial consultation.

How do I look after my dental implants?

The best way to look after your dental implants is to treat them just like natural teeth! Include them in your normal oral hygiene routine, and brush and floss daily. This helps to keep the gum surrounding your implant, and your natural teeth, healthy and problem-free.
