Why have a dental crown?

Crowns are commonly used to repair damage that has affected the strength of your tooth and the way it functions. As they replace the whole outside structure, they provide a full rebuild for teeth that need an overall restoration.

If your teeth have become weakened or damaged due to factors such as multiple fillings or extensive decay, a crown can transform the way you chew, eat and speak. Crowns can also be used to restore a tooth following root canal treatment and fixed to a dental implant for an aesthetic and reliable finish.

Treatment steps

Step 1

We first ensure that the internal structure of the tooth is intact and that there are no signs of infection present. We prepare your tooth by removing a layer of tooth structure, making sure we leave a strong core.

Step 2

We take impressions of your teeth and record their colour so your crown can be made to fit perfectly. We also fit a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth between appointments.

Step 3

When your crown is ready, the temporary crown is removed and the new permanent one is fixed in place with a strong dental cement.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look after my crown?

The best way to look after your crown is to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine at home, including brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and using interdental brushes daily. Regular visits to your dentist are also important, allowing them to keep an eye on the health of your crown and the tooth underneath.

Can I choose the colour of my crown?

Yes, you can choose the colour of your crown, based on your personal preferences. We may advise you of the shade which would best match your natural tooth colour, but it is ultimately up to you. If you are considering having whitening treatment, you may prefer to have this treatment first, as whitening is not effective on crowns and your crown can then be made to match your new shade.

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, dental crowns can last around 10-15 years before needing to be replaced. The preparation process for a crown involves carefully shaping your natural tooth, which means you will always require a restoration on that tooth.

Is getting a crown painful?

We use local anaesthetic to numb the affected area before preparing your tooth for a crown, and fitting the crown itself to make sure you won’t feel any pain. We take the time to ensure you feel relaxed and comfortable before beginning any treatment. Many patients find that having a crown is no more uncomfortable than a filling.
