If you have tooth pain or are showing other signs of infection, we examine your mouth to ensure that root canal treatment is the best solution for you. We take digital x-rays to look at the root canals in your tooth in more detail and aid our diagnosis and planning. We also make sure the infection hasn’t spread to any other areas. We make sure you are feeling comfortable with the treatment process and give you the chance to ask us any questions.
To begin your root canal treatment, we place a rubber sheet around your tooth to keep it dry. We use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable as we remove infected pulp from inside your tooth.
We clean the root canals with an antibacterial solution and use special tiny instruments to shape them effectively. We fill the canals with a rubber material known as gutta-percha to seal them and prevent re-infection.
We complete your root canal treatment with a permanent filling or a crown placed on your tooth. This restores your tooth shape and improves the way it looks and functions, helping you bite, chew and speak easily again.

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, involves removing infected tissues from inside a tooth to stop infection and relieve pain. It saves your natural tooth from extraction, which helps support your facial shape, teeth alignment and overall oral health.
The dental pulp in your tooth is made up of soft tissue and nerves, and reaches from the crown to the tips of the root. Decay, trauma, severe gum disease and excessive wear can all contribute to the pulp becoming infected and inflamed and the need for endodontic treatment. The symptoms of pulp damage include pain, sensitivity, swelling, and a bad taste in the mouth. Please contact us for urgent advice if you experience any symptoms of a root canal infection.

Root canal treatment has a reputation for being painful, but it is often nowhere near as bad as you are expecting. Modern endodontic treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a regular filling, and the relief that you feel when you are no longer in severe tooth pain far outweighs the procedure. You may experience some mild tenderness or sensitivity after treatment, but this is temporary and can be managed using over-the-counter painkillers as advised by your endodontist.
During a root canal, the infected tissues are removed and your tooth is flushed with an antibacterial solution to clean it effectively. Your tooth is then shaped, filled and sealed to restore function and to prevent reinfection.
With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth should last for many years, and even a lifetime, with no issues. The key to this is maintaining good oral hygiene and looking after your teeth with daily brushing and flossing. It is also important to visit your dentist for routine check-ups so they can keep an eye on your root treated tooth.
The main advantage of root canal treatment is that it saves a natural tooth that would otherwise have to be extracted. This means your other teeth stay in their proper alignment and your facial structure is supported.
While root canal treatment can be used to effectively save teeth, it is important to consider all factors. Without a living pulp, the tooth can become slightly more brittle and potentially prone to fracture, especially if a crown is not fitted. Also, the process typically requires more than one appointment. Although uncommon, there’s a small risk of the initial infection not being fully eradicated or recurring later. We will always thoroughly discuss these aspects with you beforehand.
The worst part of a root canal is often the anticipation of the treatment! You may have heard some horror stories about pain or be worried about the procedure, but our friendly clinicians are here to put you at ease. Root canal treatment is often not as bad as you are expecting, with our minimally invasive and generally comfortable treatment. We’re here to help make your treatment as stress-free as possible for you.
The symptoms of pulp damage may include severe pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, tooth discolouration, gum swelling and tenderness, or a metallic taste in the mouth. However, sometimes there may be no symptoms at all, which is why it is important to visit your dentist for regular check-up appointments. If the pulp infection and inflammation is left untreated, it can cause further pain and the loss of supporting bone.
